Combine a cheap trip to a convenient destination with a weekend before Christmas, and the outcome is Alicante. The Spanish town, which lies near Valencia in the country's south, is the best option for anyone wishing to spend a budget-friendly weekend overseas. Twenty degrees in late December and Alicante offers much more than just delicious food.
The city of Alicante itself offers an assortment of activities and sights to see. The streets in the centre come alive in the evening, the restaurants are crowded with both locals and visitors until late at night, the sea is breathtaking day or night, and the castle sitting on a hilltop is the ideal place for a walk to take to see the breathtaking view over the town.
The hike up to the castle is fairly strenuous; you'll have to walk up a hill through narrow streets and a number of steps, but the vibrant colours and paintings will make the effort worthwhile. Many cats would love to hide out in these spots, keeping you company while you climb up to the castle.
